Dr Atkins New Diet Cookbook or Corazon Del Yoga

Dr. Atkins' New Diet Cookbook

Author: Robert C Atkins

This book contains 250 of the most asked for recipes at the Atkins Center.

Publishers Weekly

In 1972, Atkins became a household name with his bestselling book, The Diet Revolution . In it, he claimed that to induce rapid weight loss one need only follow a high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet--carbs were the culprit in keeping people overweight. Twenty years later, he published Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution , continuing to maintain that weight gain had little to do with fat intake--a controversial conviction. His latest work is a cookbook designed as a companion to the 1992 volume, and promising to provide the most ``mouth-watering meals for the most effective diet ever devised.'' In case readers are unfamiliar with his weight-loss program, Atkins describes its four stages and offers a selection of sample menus. Recipes range from the simple (hard-boiled eggs) to appetizers, salads, meats and poultry. No-holds-barred desserts call for heavy cream, eggs, sour cream and butter; despite Atkins's claims, his is not always light cooking. In the end, it's the desserts that illustrate the absurdities of the Atkins program: a recipe for cheesecake is chock full of cream cheese, eggs and creme fraiche, yet the final ingredient is 12 packets of a sugar substitute. ``Good cuisine has always rooted itself firmly in luxurious fat,'' writes Atkins in his introduction. Really? (June)

Library Journal

This complement to Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution (LJ 7/92) presents menus along with 200 recipes. Devised by Atkins Center director Fran Gare, the recipes follow the same high-protein, high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet (including the complex carbohydrates) that Atkins proposes in his previous book. Atkins maintains that his diet controls diabetes, but the Atkins diet is contrary to information given by the American Dietetic Association and the American Diabetic Association. In the ``University of California at Berkeley Wellness Letter'' (December 1992), Dr. Sheldon Margen cautions people against following this diet, arguing that it could harm some people, especially diabetics. All cheeses are allowed freely (though they are high in fat, sodium, and cholesterol), as are all meats. Several recipes for salad dressings contain raw eggs, which could lead to salmonella food poisoning. Since the recipes in this book could be dangerous if followed, it is not recommended.-Loraine F. Sweetland, Rebok Memorial Lib., Silver Spring, Md.

Corazon Del Yoga: Desarrollando Una Practica Personal

Author: T K V Desikachar

YOGA

The Sunday Times

"Quienes están interesados en entender lo que es el yoga, aquellos que buscan un contexto más extenso y se enfocan en su práctica hatha, aquellos que buscan el Yoga Sutra como un guía y todos aquellos directa o indierectamente, han amado y recibido algún beneficio de Krishnamacharya o Desikachar, desearán tener este libro."
Yoga International

"Una valiosa fuente de información sobre la teoría y práctica del yoga.  Indispensable para estudiantes y maestros por igual."
Indra Devi, autora de Yoga for You

A structural engineer by training, T. K. V. Desikachar lived and studied with his father until Krishnamacharya's death in 1989. He has devoted his life to yoga instruction for people of all backgrounds and all levels of ability and currently teaches at the school founded in his father's memory in Madras, as well as in Europe, the United States, Australia, and New Zealand.

Yoga Journal

I can think of no better book to recommend to a friend beginning to be excited by yoga but bewildered by the plethora of different schools and their sometimes-conflicting teachings. In addition, I would be hard-pressed to think of a book I would recommend more highly to any yoga student seeking to deepen a yoga practice. . . . The great gift of The Heart of Yoga lies not simply in the depth of Desikachar's learning, but in the compassion, gentleness, practicality, and down-to-earth spirit that permeate the book.

Buddhist Healing Touch or A Womans Guide to Urinary Incontinence

Buddhist Healing Touch: A Self-Care Program for Pain Relief and Wellness

Author: Yen Ming Sun

An introduction to the unique healing practices of the Buddhist monks.

• Examines a wide range of specific conditions and includes detailed, illustrated instructions.

• First English translation of the most widely used book on self-massage in China and Taiwan.

When Dr. Ming-Sun Yen was sentenced to hard manual labor during China's Cultural Revolution, he served his sentence in the shadow of the Lin-Yang Shih, an ancient Buddhist temple in the mountains near Fuchow. There he witnessed the impressive healing work performed by a Buddhist monk on the Red Guard's prisoners, many of whom had sustained beatings and physical injuries. For the next three years he worked as the monk's assistant, learning techniques that had been handed down in Buddhist tradition for centuries.

In Buddhist Healing Touch, Dr. Yen teaches us how to care for ourselves naturally by using acupressure, self-massage, breathing techniques, exercises, and herbal remedies. He looks at a wide range of conditions, from abdominal cramps to sinusitis. A brief diagnostic description is provided for each condition, followed by a step-by-step guide to the most effective acupressure and massage techniques for treating it. Illustrations of the acupressure points accompany each treatment as well as tips regarding diet and relevant folk cures. Possible complications are also indicated with clear instructions for when to seek the care and advice of a qualified physician.

A Woman's Guide to Urinary Incontinence

Author: Rene Genadry

Urinary incontinence causes discomfort and distress for millions of women, particularly those who have borne children, are postmenopausal, or have passed the age of forty. This condition can have a severe negative impact on one's quality of life, and successful treatment, while possible, is complex. Cowritten by a gynecologist and a urologist who have helped thousands of frustrated women, this new guide gives patients the information they need to understand their condition and make the right treatment decisions.

Dr. Rene Genadry and Dr. Jacek L. Mostwin explain how nerves, muscles, and other anatomical factors work in concert to control the bladder and how they can be affected by pregnancy, menopause, and aging. The authors discuss the common and uncommon causes of urinary incontinence, how the condition is evaluated and diagnosed, and how it can be treated. Drs. Genadry and Mostwin walk through the various treatment options -- including biofeedback and behavioral conditioning, pelvic floor exercises, medications, and surgery, as well as new and emerging therapies. They also discuss what to do if a particular treatment fails. The knowledge provided here gives the woman with urinary incontinence the power to choose treatments that meet her specific needs and preferences.

Friendly, accessible, and packed with valuable information, this guide is an essential resource for women who are troubled by urinary incontinence.

Lois K. Merry - Library Journal

Genadry (gynecology & obstetrics) and Mostwin (urology), professors and medical directors at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, have written an excellent resource for women with urinary incontinence and their caretakers. Wide in scope and thorough in coverage, the book describes the stages and types of incontinence, kinds of exams and tests, current drugs and methods of treatment, anticipated outcomes, and possible complications. Nonspecialists will appreciate that terms are defined within the text as well as in an eight-page glossary. The list of web sites is useful; however, in one case the authors miss an opportunity to guide readers to a site's A-to-Z topic list, instead recommending a search for two somewhat minor phrases. Line drawings illustrate the physiology of incontinence, while case examples tell of individual patients' experiences and outcomes. The book advises patients to advocate for their best individual care and emphasizes that every person's situation is unique. Conservative in their approach to treatment, Genadry and Mostwin eschew surgery in favor of less radical (and therefore reversible) cures. One of a few recent works on this topic for women, this is suitable for academic, public, or health-oriented libraries.

Weights for Weight Loss or Overcoming Diabetes

Weights for Weight Loss: Fat-Burning and Muscle-Sculpting Exercises with Over 200 Step-by-Step Photos

Author: Ellen Barrett

Everyone knows that dieting without exercise doesn't work. But not all exercises are equally effective. Weights for Weight Loss explains why weight training is the best way to get in shape and provides readers with a comprehensive program that will guarantee success. The author dispels the five myths of weight training (fat turns to muscle, lifting makes for bulky muscles, weights are for men, it's easy to get hurt, heavier is better) and details the numerous benefits of building muscle, such as gaining more energy and a more youthful appearance, and -- most importantly -- greater fat loss with less effort. The book features exercises for all levels of fitness, from beginner to advanced.

Each exercise is clearly explained with step-by-step instructions and photos that show proper technique. Weights for Weight Loss's specialty programs include "The 10-Minute Body Blitz," which hits all the major muscle groups; "The 30-Minute Cardio Circuit," where exercises are performed at a fast pace with no rest in between; and "The 30-Minute Super Sculpt," where heavier weights are used for three sets in a row to exhaust muscles one at a time.

Mindbody Cancer Wellness or HIV and Drug Free

Mindbody Cancer Wellness: A Self-Help Stress Management Manual

Author: Morry D Edwards

Can "optimism" and "cancer" be uttered in the same breath?

Can "wellness" and "cancer" be lived in the same life?  Can destructive and entrenched "habits of stress" be changed, even after decades?

Can one "get better" as a person during and after the life-altering experience of cancer?

Can this shattering event invite me, teach me, dare me, enable me --- to be "whole?"

If you or a loved one have been affected by cancer and its barrage of physical, emotional, and spiritual assaults, then Dr. Morry Edwards' new book MindBody Cancer Wellness A Self-Help Care Manual could be a valuable resource well worth tapping. You'll want to read it, "try" it, loan it, give it away, borrow it back, and read special pages again. And, if you sometimes feel controlled by the stress that pushes you to uncomfortable limits, you'll want this author's philosophy, if not his strategies, to seep into how you live your daily life.  Why? Because Dr. Edwards' answer to all of those opening questions is a resounding YES. It is not a SIMPLISTIC YES, although he skillfully makes complex ideas quite understandable in simple, straight-forward language. Nor is it an EASY YES, since Morry challenges us to think a little differently, behave a little differently, and to appreciate our own capacities to grow as we walk with the uninvited companion of cancer. It is, however, a BELIEVABLE YES---not only because Morry carries professional credentials on his walls and more than twenty years of counseling under his belt, but also because Morry lost both of his parents to cancer and now carries them AND their optimism in his heart.

This self-care manual is intended to help readers develop skills and effectively use strategies designed to ease the stress of cancer and its treatment. It begins with basic information about the role stress plays in our lives, positively and negatively. The author translates complex information into ideas that can help anyone understand adverse stress reactions and how they can endanger the body, mind, emotions, and behavior.  From this perspective, Dr. Edwards' book is scholarly. It tackles important aspects of the mind-body-spirit connection. From another view, Morry's work is a practical nuts 'n bolts approach to getting control of our fear, putting a bridle around the very real stresses that can drive us "nuts," or worse yet, make us ill and keep us unwell.

Introducing ideas like immune system "downers" and immune system "uppers," Dr. Edwards provides a comprehensive smorgasbord of relaxation strategies.  In detail and with specific examples, he describes how they work, how they can be implemented, and how they can help us improve our own quality of life---as we collaborate with our medical team to strengthen our bodies' defense systems in achieving our own "wellness."

MindBody Cancer Wellness: A Self-Help Stress Management Manual is a grab-bag resource of ideas, strategies, and tools, any one of which might improve emotional and mental well-being. Don't hesitate a moment to reach into this one!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Morry Edwards, Ph.D., is a licensed psychologist, who has specialized in treating people with cancer and other chronic illness for twenty-five years.  A nationally certified biofeedback practitioner, he has concentrated on psychoneuroimmunology, the scientific study of the effects of psychological factors on our bodies' physical defenses. He is an advocate of the holistic approach to health and wellness and encourages patients to take an active role in their treatment.

HIV and Drug Free: HIV, Cancer and the Immume Systems

Author: Eileen Renders

On February 4, 2001 the Herald-Tribune newspaper published an article quoting Federal Health Officials pertaining to an amendment of their long-held policy in the treatment of AIDS virus. Their original policy and approach in 1996 was to "hit early, hit hard" with drug therapy. However just five years later when they reviewed their guidelines policy, they had much concern over their findings. Many of the drug therapy treated patients had developed nerve damage, weakened bones, unusual accumulations of fat in the neck and abdomen, diabetes and a number of other serious side effects of therapy. Many developed dangerously high levels of cholesterol and other lipids in the blood, raising concern that HIV-infected people might face another epidemic-of heart disease.

The pendulum has swung from when few therapies were available and most people died from AIDS to a time when drug cocktails are effective but creating complications. To quote Fauci, co-chairman of the Federal Health Officials panel; "We are adopting a significantly more conservative recommendation profile." Their new guidelines written by the panel now calls for waiting until the immune system shows serious signs of weakening. This new attitude spares the liver toxicity while relying more on those therapies that are exactly what Renders Wellness has always provided. Those therapies are now available for everyone!

Eileen Renders N.D. shares her successful protocol for protecting and maintaining a healthy immune system. This protocol includes antagonists to avoid, toxins and suspected carcinogens (where they are found), healthier food replacements for traditional denatured and devitalized foods, generalrecommendations and non-toxic, non-addictive specific recommendations for addressing both the symptoms and the side-effects associated with both common disorders and/or disease.

Your Memory or Children With Cancer The Quality of Life

Your Memory: Use It or Lose It: The Use of Mnemonic Exercises in the Fight Against alzheimer's

Author: John David Merwin

USE IT OR LOSE IT

This little volume has been designed as a self-help tool for anyone intent on improving his or her memory skills. While it is an accepted fact that physical exercise is an essential element in maintaining a healthy body, there is seldom, if ever, a suggestion that regular brain exercises might play an important role in improving memory or in restoring a healthy brain. The author draws upon his personal experience and the extensive study of memory phenomena over a span of half a century in selecting and presenting a series of exercises, which, if conscientiously followed, can achieve meaningful results. Recent clinical studies at London's University College and at the Albert Einstein Hospital in the Bronx, New York, confirm that Alzheimer's patients who are beginning to forget names can learn to remember. After just one month of training several of the patients showed considerable improvement. Many of the feats of memory, which are recommended in the later chapters of this volume, are beyond the comprehension of the uninitiated and are often referred to as miracles. They are, in fact, nothing more than the achievements of anyone who is truly determined to succeed in improving and/or restoringhis or her memory.Should the mnemonic exercises described and recommendedherein also prove helpful in improving the mental condition of persons in the early stages of Alzheimer's the author's fondest hopes will surely be realized.

Children With Cancer The Quality of Life

Author: Christine Eiser

"Physicians and families have become aware that cancer has huge implications for the quality of the child's life. Children with Cancer: The Quality of Life is an attempt to describe how quality of life is affected at different stages of the disease process. Comprehensive reviews are provided of the impact on the child's physical activity, social life, and school and educational achievements. Special consideration is given to children with leukemia (one of the more common cancers) and brain tumors." Cancer not only affects the child but every member of the family. Consequently, there is coverage of cancer's effects on parents and on healthy brothers and sisters. To the extent that improvements in survival have been achieved by national and international collaboration between clinicans, it is concluded that efforts to improve the quality of these children's lives is dependent on collaboration between clinicians, nurses, and behavioral scientists at national and international levels. This book provides an impetus for such collaboration.

The Seven Key Principles of Successful Recovery or Compulsive Overeater

The Seven Key Principles of Successful Recovery: The Basic Tools for Progress, Growth, and Happiness

Author: Mel B

The key principles of Alcoholics Anonymous are widely familiar as seven popular slogans: First things first. Live and let live. Easy does it. Let go and let God. One day at a time. Pass it on. Keep it simple.

This inspiring book explores the deep wisdom behind these simple sayings and shows how the underlying principles relate not only to recovery but also to living happily and well in a confusing world.

Mel B. and Bill P. offer a unique look at the historical, spiritual, and Twelve Step roots of the main principles of recovery. Full of practical help and support, this book gives readers a clear and useful sense of how these principles apply to the main goals of recovery: staying clean and sober, building emotional stability and maturity for successful living in sobriety, and finding the will and the way to get along with others and fulfill our full human potential.

Chinese Magical Medicine or Quest for Conception

Chinese Magical Medicine (Asian Religions and Cultures)

Author: Michel Strickmann

This book argues that the most profound and far-reaching effects of Buddhism on Chinese culture occurred at the level of practice, specifically in religious rituals designed to cure people of disease, demonic possession, and bad luck. This practice would leave its most lasting imprint on the liturgical tradition of Taoism. In focusing on religious practice, it provides a corrective to traditional studies of Chinese religion, which overemphasize metaphysics and spirituality.

A basic concern with healing characterizes the entire gamut of religious expression in East Asia. By concentrating on the medieval development of Chinese therapeutic ritual, the author discovers the germinal core of many still-current rituals across the social and doctrinal frontiers of Buddhism and Taoism, as well as outside the Buddhist or Taoist fold.

The book is based on close readings of liturgies written in classical Chinese. The author describes and translates many of them, analyzes their structure, and seeks out nonliturgical sources to shed further light on the politics involved in specific performances. Unlike the few previous studies of related rituals, this book combines a scholar's understanding of the structure and goals of these rites with a healthy suspicion of the practitioners’ claims to uniqueness.

Booknews

This study of healing in the Taoist tradition examines how misdeeds and demonology cause illness per classic proto-Tantric and Buddhist texts. In completing this work of a late U. of California-Berkeley professor of Chinese religions, Faure (Asian religions, Stanford U.) added extensive reference materials. Illustrations include disease- curing seals. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Quest for Conception: Gender, Infertility, and Egyptian Medical Traditions

Author: Marcia Claire Inhorn

In Quest for Conception, Marcia C. Inhorn portrays the poignant struggles of poor, urban Egyptian women and their attempts to overcome infertility. The author draws upon fifteen months of fieldwork in urban Egypt to present moving stories of infertile Muslim women whose tumultuous medical pilgrimages -- or their "search for children," as they call their quests for conception -- have yet to produce the desired pregnancies. Inhorn examines the devastating impact of infertility on the lives of these women, who are threatened with divorce by their husbands, harassed by their husbands' families, and ostracized by neighbors.

Beliefs about procreation and infertility causation and cure among the Egyptian urban poor derive from a five-thousand-year history of shifting medical pluralism. Although colonially produced Western biomedicine is the dominant system in Egypt today, it represents only one of an array of therapeutic alternatives. Infertile women seek help from both "biogynecologists" (practitioners of Western biomedicine) and "ethnogynecologists" (practitioners of indigenous ethnomedicine), often using the remedies of both simultaneously. Quest for Conception examines in detail the variety of ethnomedical and biomedical treatments for infertility and concludes that treatments of both types are often ineffective and sometimes harmful. Given this untherapeutic setting, the future of infertile Egyptian women is explored in light of needed changes in reproductive health policy and the introduction of new reproductive technologies.

Quest for Conception is the first comprehensive account of non-Western women's experiences of infertility and is a novel study within the literature on Middle Eastern women.

Pesticides in the Diets of Infants and Children or Meeting Psychosocial Needs of Women with Breast Cancer

Pesticides in the Diets of Infants and Children

Author: National Research Council

Many of the pesticides applied to food crops in this country are present in foods and may pose risks to human health. Current regulations are intended to protect the health of the general population by controlling pesticide use. This book explores whether the present regulatory approaches adequately protect infants and children, who may differ from adults in susceptibility and in dietary exposures to pesticide residues.

The committee focuses on four major areas:

  • Susceptibility: Are children more susceptible or less susceptible than adults to the effects of dietary exposure to pesticides?
  • Exposure: What foods do infants and children eat, and which pesticides and how much of them are present in those foods? Is the current information on consumption and residues adequate to estimate exposure?
  • Toxicity: Are toxicity tests in laboratory animals adequate to predict toxicity in human infants and children? Do the extent and type of toxicity of some chemicals vary by species and by age?
  • Assessing risk: How is dietary exposure to pesticide residues associated with response? How can laboratory data on lifetime exposures of animals be used to derive meaningful estimates of risk to children? Does risk accumulate more rapidly during the early years of life?

This book will be of interest to policymakers, administrators of research in the public and private sectors, toxicologists, pediatricians and other health professionals, and the pesticide industry.

Booknews

Explores whether infants and children differ from adults in susceptibility and in dietary exposures to pesticide residues in food, and if so, whether the present regulatory approaches adequately protect them. Based on the committee's research, 1988- 93, summarizes pesticide use, data collection methods, toxicity testing, and federal regulations, emphasizing prenatal and perinatal toxicity, age-specific eating patterns, estimating pesticide residues, and mathematical risk modeling. Meeting Psychosocial Needs of Women with Breast Cancer

Author: Maria Hewitt

In Meeting Psychosocial Needs of Women with Breast Cancer, the National Cancer Policy Board of the Institute of Medicine examines the psychosocial consequences of the cancer experience. The book focuses specifically on breast cancer in women because this group has the largest survivor population (over 2 million) and this disease is the most extensively studied cancer from the standpoint of psychosocial effects. The book characterizes the psychosocial consequences of a diagnosis of breast cancer, describes psychosocial services and how they are delivered, and evaluates their effectiveness. It assesses the status of professional education and training and applied clinical and health services research and proposes policies to improve the quality of care and quality of life for women with breast cancer and their families. Because cancer of the breast is likely a good model for cancer at other sites, recommendations for this cancer should be applicable to the psychosocial care provided generally to individuals with cancer. For breast cancer, and indeed probably for any cancer, the report finds that psychosocial services can provide significant benefits in quality of life and success in coping with serious and life-threatening disease for patients and their families.

Doody Review Services

Reviewer: Melody L McKinney, DNS, RN (Indiana State University)
Description: Nearly all women diagnosed with breast cancer experience psychological distress but most effectively cope and adapt to their situations. Yet, roughly 30 percent of women experience major or prolonged distress and would likely benefit from some form of psychosocial intervention. In this report by the National Cancer Policy Board of the National Institute of Medicine and the National Research Council, the psycho-oncology literature on breast cancer is reviewed for the purpose of making policy recommendations to enhance the delivery of breast cancer care. This second report of a three-part series on cancer survivorship builds on an earlier recommendation that psychosocial support services are essential to quality cancer care.
Purpose: The purpose of this report is to "characterize the psychosocial consequences of a diagnosis of breast cancer; evaluate the effectiveness of services to alleviate psychosocial distress; assess the status of current psychosocial interventions; assess the status of professional education and training and applied research; and propose policies to improve the quality of care and life for women with breast cancer and their families."
Audience: The authors anticipate the report will be useful to "stakeholders and policy makers in cancer care, women with or concerned about breast cancer, and the general public."
Features: The report contains eight chapters. Chapters one and two provide an introduction and overview of the epidemiology of breast cancer. Chapters three and four examine the psychosocial needs of women experiencing breast cancer, along with psychosocial services and providers. Chapter five reviews the literature on psychosocial intervention research. Chapters six and seven focus on the structure and delivery of psychosocial services, along with barriers and the use of services. Chapter eight examines the status of breast cancer research, suggesting future research priorities and recommendations to research sponsors.
Assessment: This well-referenced and scholarly report fulfills its purpose of illuminating the psychosocial needs of women with breast cancer and making recommendations for clinical and research priorities. A multitude of tables and figures facilitate the presentation of vast amounts of information, yet are of questionable value to the general public. Appendix A, an agenda on a past research/educational offering, seems of little current value. Appendix B provides excellent table summarizations of clinical trials in breast cancer research from 1980 to 2002. As with findings from any focused research, caution should be taken in generalizing the findings and recommendations from this report on women with breast cancer to all cancer patients and survivors.

La Salud en la Mujer or Behind the Smile

La Salud en la Mujer: Higiene, Prevencion y Tratamientos Naturales de las Enfermedades de la Mujer

Author: Guy Roulier

Behind the Smile: My Journey Out of Postpartum Depression

Author: Marie Osmond

"I was sitting on the kitchen floor, heaving in sobs, and all I could think was: 'This can't possibly be me.'" In a candid account, Marie Osmond, beloved actress, singing star, and television personality, discloses her heartwrenching battle with postpartum depression and the private pain behind her public persona. Sinking fast into numbing despair after the birth of her last baby, Marie Osmond joined the thousands of women each year who suffer from an illness not often discussed openly. Now she tells her inspiring story...

Behind the Smile

At age thirty-nine, known for her signature smile and upbeat attitude, Marie Osmond was living what seemed to be the picture-perfect life. She was beautiful, talented, happily married, co-hosting the successful Donny and Marie Show, and pregnant with her seventh child. What could go wrong-so wrong that it would send her on a tearful flight away from her home and make national headlines?

What went wrong was postpartum depression (PPD). Behind the Smile bravely and honesty reveals Marie Osmond's difficult road back from PPD and speaks out for other women who have experienced PPD's debilitating effects. Writing in her wonderfully vivacious voice-and sharing sixteen pages of private family photos-Marie describes her childhood in the famous Osmond family, her own career, and the births and adoptions of her beloved children. For the first time, she unveils her closely guarded home life to reach out to other women who are struggling.

But in Behind the Smile, Marie does more than tell a personal story of courage and triumph. Along with Dr. Judith Moore, who helped diagnose and treat her problem, she includes real help for women suffering from PPD. Readers will learn about the tests for PPD, where to find medical treatment, and what safe, natural therapies and diet guidelines can help rebalance the body's hormones. By sharing her healing journey and inspirational words, Marie Osmond gives others hope. By including Dr. Moore's wise advice, she provides a shining path for them to begin the journey too.

"I knew I had to leave until I could come to terms with what was happening to me.

"I couldn't let my children continue to see me this way.

"I walked down the stairs and put my precious newborn baby into the nanny's arms. I put three blank checks and my credit cards in her hand, saying, 'Please understand that I couldn't do this if I didn't have you here. I can't stay. There is something wrong, really wrong with me, and I have to leave until I figure it out. Brian is at this number. Call him. He'll come home.'

"I have no idea how my feet carried me to the car. I turned the key in the ignition, put the car in reverse, and backed down the driveway. When I shifted the gears into drive, something overpowering moved inside of me, from the deepest part of my soul. My body was racked with hysterical crying, and I began to understand for the first time why a person would want to take her own life."

It is authored by a wide range of international experts in this field from all continents and edited by a world-renowned researcher and academician on the topic of pigmentation disorders. Practical, concise chapters cover all common surgical and nonsurgical treatment approaches and address the broad range of cosmetic issues facing patients with darker skin pigmentation. More than 350 full-color illustrations complement the text.

Doody Review Services

Reviewer:Patricia Wong, MD(Stanford University Medical Center)
Description:Dermatologists performing cosmetic procedures and treating various skin conditions in individuals with darker skin types must take into account the structural and cellular differences in darker skin pigmentation. This book provides recommendations for therapy as well as precautions and also includes good basic dermatology information that doesn't necessarily pertain to just ethnic skin types.
Purpose:The purpose is to educate dermatologists on how to treat patients with darker skin.
Audience:The audience is dermatologists.
Features:Dermal filler injections, how a blepharoplasty is performed, and how to inject Botox are illustrated in photographs. There are many color photographs of good quality throughout the book, but some are referred to incorrectly in the text. For example, in the discussion on where to inject Botox in order to raise the eyebrows, the book refers to a photograph showing injections in the glabellar area to decrease frown lines. The plastic surgery chapters point out the anatomic differences in Asian eye shapes versus Caucasian eye shapes and the factors dermatologists should consider when trying to achieve a wider eye look.
Assessment:This is a good basic dermatology book with an emphasis on treating darker skin types. Procedures such as chemical peels, laser, surgery, etc., are succinctly described and a summary of the author's experiences treating darker skinned individuals follows the descriptions.

Like a Fish in Water or Herbs

Like a Fish in Water: Yoga for Children

Author: Isabelle Koch

• A playful introduction to the practice of yoga for the health and well-being of your child.

• Includes step-by-step instructions for more than 20 postures, as well as information on breathing and relaxation exercises.

• Each posture is demonstrated by a child whose image is magically woven into full-color illustrations.

• An invitation for children, ages three and up, to experience the healthy benefits of yoga.

In this exuberant and colorful book, author and illustrator Isabelle Koch introduces children to hatha yoga, inviting them into a world of good health and vitality through her use of playful analogies and whimsical illustrations. Like a Fish in Water provides step-by-step instructions for more than 20 yoga postures and the basics of breathing, as well as a variety of relaxation exercises. Each posture is demonstrated by a child whose image is magically woven into the brightly colored backgrounds and accompanied by text that clearly and simply guides the child through the movements, using language accessible to everyone.

Daily yoga practice can provide an island of calm in today's hectic world in which children are continuously bombarded with stimuli. Yoga fosters both physical and emotional health, sharpens focus, and improves attention span. Like a Fish in Water offers parents a perfect opportunity to spend time with their children, while engaging in a healthy and enjoyable activity. So whether it is used to get the day off to a positive start or to wind it down toward a peaceful end, Koch's book and the instruction it offers is ideal for parents, teachers, and, most importantly, children.

Children's Literature

In the preface by Laurent de Brunhoff, his first paragraph provides a good summary: "The practice of Yoga provides mental peace and, at the same time, a consciousness of one's own body. Certain postures develop suppleness and balance, others strengthen muscles." Like me, Laurent started Yoga well into middle age. If I had any idea of the benefits, I would have started much earlier in life and that is why I am delighted to see several good books available for young readers. In this one as with The Kids' Yoga Book of Feelings by Mary Humphry, there is emphasis on the importance of breathing when doing a pose. The introduction provides a little history but not really sufficient to understand the basis of Yoga and what the Mudras really are. Each pose is demonstrated in an illustration and the text explains how to do it and why it is good for the body and mind. The photographs of the girl in the poses are superimposed on backgrounds that have been created by the author. These illustrations have a childlike quality. The twenty described are known by various names and there seems to be a mixture of the Sanskrit and English. The text is fairly complex and the closing section addressing breathing and relaxation exercises is printed in black on a purple background, making it almost impossible to read. The layout and text are not nearly as child friendly as Humphry's book, but a good teacher or parent could use both effectively. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot

Walking the World in Wonder: A Children's Herbal

Author: Ellen Evert Hopman

Introduce children to the magic of using herbs for healing, cooking, and nature crafts and inspire a lifelong interest in the natural world.

• Designed especially for children ages five to ten.

• A hands-on book for children, filled with fun, easy-to-follow activities.

Walking the World in Wonder covers the medicinal and magical uses of sixty-seven common herbs. Each herb playfully introduces itself and talks about its habitat and many uses. With fun, easy-to-follow activities, herbalist Ellen Evert Hopman teaches children basic herbal skills and invites them to make a sunflower seed mosaic, sew a catnip-filled mouse, and dig for Jerusalem artichoke roots. The book also includes simple recipes that children can use, with adult supervision, to treat minor ailments--peppermint tea to soothe a troubled tummy or horse chestnut salve to heal a scraped knee. Children gain a sense of self-sufficiency and awe for the earth's treasures by eating wild nettle greens, sprinkling a sandwich with nasturtium flowers, making strawberry honey, and learning to season food with dill they've gathered themselves. Parents and teachers will appreciate how these earth-centered activities are placed within a broader social and environmental context. Sixty-seven full-color photographs enable children, parents, and teachers to identify these herbs during walks and field trips. Walking the World in Wonder gives children a direct and joyous experience of their connection to the natural world and inspires a lifelong interest in their own health and that of the planet.

Ten Years Younger or Cross Training For Dummies

Ten Years Younger: The Amazing Ten Week Plan to Look Better, Feel Better, and Turn Back the Clock

Author: Steven MD Masley

How would you like to look and feel ten years younger in just ten weeks time?

Studies show that Americans on the whole are aging faster than ever with conditions like diabetes, cancer, and heart disease occurring increasingly earlier on in life-along with everyday age indicators like wrinkles and love handles. Now, Dr. Steven Masley, former medical director of the prestigious Pritikin Longevity Center and a pioneer in anti-aging medicine, delivers a breakthrough plan to turn back the clock, inside and out-no matter what your age!

Originally featured on the Discovery Channel, the Ten Years Younger Program is designed to combat the roots of accelerated aging. Poor nutrition, toxins in the environment, stress, and exposure to free radicals all make us old before our time, along with a little-known aging culprit: low- and no-carb diets. As Dr. Masley shows, low-carb diets deprive the body of anti-aging phytonutrients and fiber, accelerate osteoporosis, and damage brain cells. So the first secret of turning back time is: Eat your carbs!

Each week, Ten Years Younger guides you through an age-busting combination of cutting-edge nutritional choices, relaxation techniques to reduce the aging effects of stress, and simple workouts designed to build lean muscle and trim and tone your body from head to toe. By following the plan for just ten weeks, you will:
Achieve significant weight loss-up to twenty-five pounds
Boost your energy levels
Rejuvenate your skin
Enhance brain function
Prevent and reverse the onset of diabetes and heart disease
Lower your cholesterol and blood pressure
Improve sexual vitality

With tools to helpyou assess how your body is really aging, weekly shopping lists and meal plans, and over 100 delicious recipes packed with antioxidants and anti-aging nutrients, Ten Years Younger is the healthiest, safest, and fastest way to take off the years-no surgery required!
