Doody Review Services

Reviewer:Patricia Wong, MD(Stanford University Medical Center)
Description:Dermatologists performing cosmetic procedures and treating various skin conditions in individuals with darker skin types must take into account the structural and cellular differences in darker skin pigmentation. This book provides recommendations for therapy as well as precautions and also includes good basic dermatology information that doesn't necessarily pertain to just ethnic skin types.
Purpose:The purpose is to educate dermatologists on how to treat patients with darker skin.
Audience:The audience is dermatologists.
Features:Dermal filler injections, how a blepharoplasty is performed, and how to inject Botox are illustrated in photographs. There are many color photographs of good quality throughout the book, but some are referred to incorrectly in the text. For example, in the discussion on where to inject Botox in order to raise the eyebrows, the book refers to a photograph showing injections in the glabellar area to decrease frown lines. The plastic surgery chapters point out the anatomic differences in Asian eye shapes versus Caucasian eye shapes and the factors dermatologists should consider when trying to achieve a wider eye look.
Assessment:This is a good basic dermatology book with an emphasis on treating darker skin types. Procedures such as chemical peels, laser, surgery, etc., are succinctly described and a summary of the author's experiences treating darker skinned individuals follows the descriptions.
