Cancer Talk: Voices of Hope and Endurance from the Group Room, the World's Largest Cancer Support Group

Author: Selma R Schimmel

For the first time, Cancer Talk provides a support group in a book.

Research shows that cancer patients who attend support groups can survive longer and lead fuller lives than patients receiving medical treatment alone. Cancer Talk, based on "The Group Room®," the nation's only talk-radio cancer support show, brings hope, information, and inspiration to everyone affected by cancer. Show host Selma Schimmel, a cancer advocate and longtime survivor, has gathered the voices of cancer patients and survivors, family and friends, physicians, therapists, and other healthcare professionals to create an invaluable guide to help you:

  • Deal with the wide range of emotions a cancer diagnosis provokes
  • Cope with relationships, intimacy, and physical changes
  • Optimize the doctor-patient relationship and navigate treatment options
  • Handle the side effects of treatment
  • Understand legal, workplace, and insurance issues
  • Live with and beyond cancer

Anyone whose life has been touched by cancer will find new support from the intimate and empowering voices of the only real experts out there—the people who live with cancer.

Library Journal

Terrified. Angry. Confused. Lost. Alone. All aptly describe one's reaction after a cancer diagnosis. Author Schimmel was diagnosed with breast cancer 16 years ago and felt that cancer patients needed more than the patronizing, often paternalistic attitude of some doctors. She founded Vital Options, a nationwide communications organization that offers information, support, and advocacy through a radio talk show, "The Group Room®." The words of cancer patients, family members, physicians, and therapists along with commentary from Schimmel comprises Cancer Talk. The book is divided into four main categories, "Handling the Medical Aspects of Cancer," "Dealing with Your Emotions," "The Legal and Social Aspects of Cancer," and "Beyond Cancer," and discusses cancer in young adults and children, the needs of caregivers, and negotiating the maze of managed care, among other issues. Each chapter ends with a bulleted list of things to do, and a resource list concludes the book. People undergoing cancer treatment and their families will find this (and its radio show sire) an invaluable source of information, advice, encouragement, and comfort. Highly recommended for public libraries and patient health collections. USA Today - Katy Kelly

This worst thing about this book is that someday you will need it. You, or someone you care about, will be diagnosed with cancer. The best thing about htis book is that it will help. A lot. Cancer Talk is about hope, endurance and survival...There is no question that cancer is a difficult journey, but this book lets readers know they are not travelling alone.

Kirkus Reviews

Advice and support from those with cancer, based on "The Group Room," a talk-radio cancer support show. Schimmel, the show's host, was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 28 (16 years ago), shortly after her mother's death from ovarian cancer. She and Fox (The Arthritis Cure, etc.) include advice from those with the disease, from their families and friends, from physicians and therapists—all of which is carefully selected and clearly presented, and all of which reflects Schimmel's down-to-earth approach. Her own diagnosis and treatment were delayed by poor medical care—it was then, she says, that she first understood the difference between being a passive patient and being an active medical consumer. As there were many cancer deaths in her family, "I had absolutely no role models for survival." Her goal here is not so much to give exact medical advice as to give some reassurance and "some sense of direction out of the haze." She succeeds, sometimes with pointers on getting the best medical care (having an advocate with you at all appointments; getting into a clinical trial), sometimes with support in negotiating fear, sadness, and grief. Schimmel compassionately offers help for those facing imminent mortality, including psychological support, with ideas for symptom and pain control. An up-to-date resource list is included. A Guys Gotta Eat or Triumph Over Hepatitis C

A Guy's Gotta Eat: The Regular's Guy's Guide to Eating Smart

Author: Russ Klettk

Millions of modern American men want to eat better but don't have the time to count calories. They are turned off by the prospect of forever giving up burgers and fries and confused by the media's conflicting health-related messages. A Guy's Gotta Eat proves that healthy eating is a surprisingly easy option. Self-taught nutritionist and weekend warrior triathlete Russ Klettke, along with sports nutritionist Deanna Conte, provide all the tips and tools men need to start eating better, from nutrition facts to advice about cooking for a hot date. Included are shopping lists of the 60 grocery items every man should have in his kitchen—and "combinations" (rather than traditional recipes) which make whipping up good, healthy food easier than ever. The authors make smart eating automatic and simple, whether one is cooking at home or dining out. Loosely based on the immensely popular Zone diet and focusing on fruits, vegetables, proteins, and "good" carbs, A Guy's Gotta Eat is a whole-life guide for men who say, "I should eat better but don't know how."

Triumph Over Hepatitis C: An Alternative Medicine Solution

Author: Lloyd Wright

Revised and Expanded Third Edition.

Triumph Over Hepatitis C, An Alternative Medicine Solution 2002 Revised and Expanded Edition contains my story of how I contracted hepatitis C from blood transfusions in 1979 and the graphic turbo charged events that followed.

I document my encounters with the medical community and their failure to deal with this virus. In this new expanded edition I document the horrific injustices I encountered and expose the fact that this same set of circumstances still plague the medical community today eight years later.

After speaking with over 50,000 people who have hepatitis c, speaking at several universities and conventions and speaking on numerous radio shows, I still encounter the same lack of knowledge about hepatitis c both in American society and the medical community.

I have answered the most frequently asked questions encountered over the past 3 Ѕ years of constant contact with the infected.

There are several new chapters that detail the long-term effects of interferon.

In Part 2, I detail the exact program that I used to treat the virus after interferon failed.

My blood tests and liver biopsy are included as well as my herb schedule which tells how and when to best take the suggested herbs, supplements and glandulars.

This illustrated edition includes many new testimonials and research by many Medical Doctors who know that interferon is a drug looking for a disease to cure and hepatitis c is not it.

About the Author

I contracted hepatitis c in 1979 from 4 blood transfusions. After 15 years of misdiagnoses I was finally diagnosed by mistake. My doctor told me that interferon was an 80% cure and it was my only hope. After interferon failed Idecided I was not finished yet. I was given 3 to 5 years to live. That was 8 years ago.

After curing myself from this tragic virus, I wrote my first book, Triumph Over Hepatitis C, and discovered that thousands of people had similar experiences as I did.

Thousands called and emailed to find out just what to do. I then began to supply people with the same items I used to get well at wholesale prices.

This was never my intent; it just developed and has saved the lives of many.

People who have been bed ridden for years get up and go back to work.

People from all over the world come to me just to say thank you for having their lives back. It is just overwhelming.

I then published Hepatitis C Free, Alternative Medicine VS. The Drug Industry, The People Speak. This is a book of testimonials, a cross section of over 50,000 emails and letters from people who did some of what was in my first book. Many have been blessed from my experience and I continue to help every person I can.

Living with Hepatitis B or First Year Prostate Cancer

Living with Hepatitis B

Author: Gregory T Everson

A new book from the authors of the bestselling Living with Hepatitis C. Chronic hepatitis B, a condition that currently affects 1.25 to 1.5 million Americans, is a serious progressive disease that can lead to cirrhosis, liver cancer, the need for liver transplantation and death. According to the Centers for Disease Control, more than 200,000 Americans of all ages are infected each year with the hepatitis B virus (HBV). Sufferers of acute hepatitis B can become jaundiced, severely fatigued and too ill to work. Although most recover, some will experience acute liver failure, need emergent liver transplantation or die. Experts estimate that up to 10 percent of infected adults and 25 percent of infected children under the age of five will develop chronic hepatitis B. Now the team that wrote the bestselling Living with Hepatitis C brings to hepatitis B sufferers the same authoritative information, expert answers, practical guidance, hope and inspiration. Living with Hepatitis B explains in everyday language• the nature of the disease and its effects on your body • how to recognize early warning symptoms • what you should do if you get infected • the HBV vaccine: is it safe, is it effective? • how to avoid infecting others, how to understand blood tests, nutrition tips, treatment options, research trends and more. The first, most comprehensive and authoritative guide to HBV for the general public, Living with Hepatitis B is sure to become a classic.

First Year--Prostate Cancer: An Essential Guide for the Newly Diagnosed (First Year Series)

Author: Christopher Lukas

Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in American men—about 1 in 6 will be diagnosed in his lifetime—but fortunately it is also one of the most treatable cancers. From the first moment of his diagnosis, author Christopher Lukas took charge and educated himself on every aspect of his condition. Now, as a "patient-expert," he guides those newly diagnosed step-by-step through their first year with prostate cancer. Lukas provides crucial information about the nature of the disease, treatment options, diet, exercise, social concerns, emotional issues, networking with others, and much more. The First Year®-Prostate Cancer will be an essential resource for everyone who wants to be an informed, active participant in the management of their condition.

Library Journal

These two volumes continue the "First Year" series written by the diagnosed for the newly diagnosed (see also Type 2 Diabetes, Hepatitis C, and Fibroids). Chapters are chronologically arranged: days one through seven after the diagnosis, the remaining weeks of the first month, then monthly for the remainder of the year. Each chapter contains a learning section (factual aspects of diagnosis, treatment, nutrition, support, and clinical trials) and a living section (practical tips and anecdotes on family/social issues, diagnosis and treatment, and financial matters). Both books are written accessibly and compassionately and stress patient empowerment. Although their content is medically sound and fairly comprehensive, it is more shallow than introductive in that it glosses over topics without giving much indication of their complexity or depth. For instance, in Prostate Cancer, there is no mention of how and why biopsies are not 100 percent accurate. While both books have a table of contents and plans for an index, topics are often scattered (e.g., "PSA testing" in Prostate Cancer and "caregivers" in Parkinson's Disease). Unfortunately, too, glossary definitions tend toward the technical, with terms like genetic transmission and biochemical changes, and resource sections lack effective organization and key governmental resources (e.g., MedlinePlus). These are marginal purchases for consumer health collections, especially those that have Nutan Sharma and Elaine Richman's Parkinson's Disease and the Family: A New Guide and American Cancer Society's Complete Guide to Prostate Cancer, edited by David G. Bostwick and others. (Indexes, illustrations, and diagrams not seen.)-Janice Flahiff, Medical Univ. Lib. of Ohio, Toledo Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

Being Positive or A Million Little Pieces

Being Positive: The Lives of Men and Women with HIV

Author: Robert Klitzman

The clearest picture we have of what life is like for men and women who have been diagnosed HIV positive, based upon unique in-depth interviews and remarkable for its candor. An unforgettable picture of what extremity looks like and how it is dealt with. --Clifford Geertz

Journal of the American Medical Association

Being Positive provides many important lessons and messages for health care workers as they try to fit into the priorities and actual lives of people living with the virus. The title symbolizes both HIV positivity and the attitude of those affected. Dr Klitzman's stories reveal not only appropriate coping mechanisms, but actual psychological, social, and spiritual growth resulting from the struggle his subjects have faced in getting on with their lives...in being able to both be positive and be HIV positive.

Journal of Gay & Lesbian Psychotherapy

What distinguishes this series of narratives from others is the observation and reflection on...experiences of those...represented in the book.

Library Journal

Parts of this book are difficult to read. Included here are stories of people rejected by their family, living on the streets, neglecting their children, drinking too much, shooting up too much, and not caring nearly enough. But there are inspirational stories as well. Psychiatrist Klitzman (In a House of Dreams and Glass, LJ 3/1/95), who conducted in-depth interviews with people who contracted HIV through sexual contact or IV drug use, noticed six patterns of how they deal with their HIV status: the alternative culture of HIV social organizations, spirituality, focused work and volunteerism, turning to their families, minimizing their illness or denying it, and seeking relief of stress through drugs and alcohol. Some souls try all six. An insightful work; recommended for medical and academic libraries.Lee Arnold, Historical Society of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia

Booknews

In-depth interviews with a broad cross-sections of people with HIV provide a compassionate portrait of their losses, strengths, and attitudes, and their ability to finding meaning in life. Looks at patterns of spiritual beliefs, work and volunteer activities, and family relations through perspectives from anthropology, existential psychiatry, and depth psychology. A Million Little Pieces

Author: James Frey

“The most lacerating tale of drug addiction since William S. Burroughs’ Junky.” —The Boston Globe

“Again and again, the book delivers recollections that leave the reader winded and unsteady. James Frey’s staggering recovery memoir could well be seen as the final word on the topic.”—San Francisco Chronicle

“A brutal, beautifully written memoir.”—The Denver Post

“Gripping . . . A great story . . . You can’t help but cheer his victory.” —Los Angeles Times Book Review

Entertainment Weekly

[A] thoroughly engrossing memoir...

The San Francisco Chronicle

[I]t gives away nothing to say that he finds himself whole at the end of A Million Little Pieces. How that came to be would be a first-rate tale of suspense, if it weren't drawn so hideously from an actual life.—James Sullivan

Publishers Weekly

For as long as he can remember, Frey has had within him something that he calls "the Fury," a bottomless source of anger and rage that he has kept at bay since he was 10 by obliterating his consciousness with alcohol and drugs. When this memoir begins, the author is 23 and is wanted in three states. He has a raw hole in his cheek big enough to stick a finger through, he's missing four teeth, he's covered with spit blood and vomit, and without ID or any idea where the airplane he finds himself on is heading. It turns out his parents have sent him to a drug rehab center in Minnesota. From the start, Frey refuses to surrender his problem to a 12-step program or to victimize himself by calling his addictions a disease. He demands to be held fully accountable for the person he is and the person he may become. If Frey is a victim, he comes to realize, it's due to nothing but his own bad decisions. Wyman's reading of Frey's terse, raw prose is ideal. His unforgettable performance of Frey's anesthesia-free dental visit will be recalled by listeners with every future dentist appointment. His lump-in-the-throat contained intensity, wherein he neither sobs nor howls with rage but appears a breath away from both, gives listeners a palpable glimpse of the power of addiction and the struggle for recovery. Simultaneous release with the Doubleday hardcover (Forecasts, Mar. 10). (May) Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.

Library Journal

Frey wakes up on an airplane with four broken teeth, a broken nose, a massive cut on his cheek, and unsure where he is or where he's going. Where he ends up is a residential treatment center based in Minnesota. This is the story of his experiences in that center as an addict and alcoholic. Listeners will meet the residents, including some who helped Frey continue his treatment and his work toward sobriety. The author's tale is brutal and honest, providing a realistic view of the life of an addict, something not for the faint of heart. It's full of profanity and graphic depictions of violence and drug use. In fact, Frey's description of the repair of his teeth without painkillers or anesthesia may keep people from ever going to the dentist again. That said, this presentation, read by Oliver Wyman, is an important addition for all library collections. Organizations that provide support for substance abusers, counseling centers, and prison libraries also should consider purchase.-Danna Bell-Russel, Library of Congress Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.

School Library Journal

Adult/High School-Frey's high school and college years are a blur of alcohol and drugs, culminating in a full-fledged crack addiction at age 23. As the book begins, his fed-up friends have convinced an airline to let him on the plane and shipped him off to his parents, who promptly put him in Hazelden, the rehabilitation clinic with the greatest success rate, 20 percent. Frey doesn't shy away from the gory details of addiction and recovery; all of the bodily fluids make major appearances here. What really separates this title from other rehab memoirs, apart from the author's young age, is his literary prowess. He doesn't rely on traditional indentation, punctuation, or capitalization, which adds to the nearly poetic, impressionistic detail of parts of the story. Readers cannot help but feel his sickness, pain, and anger, which is evident through his language. Ken Kesey's One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest (Viking, 1962) seems an apt comparison for this work-Frey maintains his principles and does not respect authority at all if it doesn't follow his beliefs. And fellow addicts are as much, if not more, help to him than the clinicians who are trying to preach the 12 steps, which he does not intend to follow in his path to sobriety. This book is highly recommended for teens interested in the darker side of human existence.-Jamie Watson, Enoch Pratt Free Library, Baltimore Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.

Kirkus Reviews

Frey's lacerating, intimate debut chronicles his recovery from multiple addictions with adrenal rage and sprawling prose. After ten years of alcoholism and three years of crack addiction, the 23-year-old author awakens from a blackout aboard a Chicago-bound airplane, "covered with a colorful mixture of spit, snot, urine, vomit and blood." While intoxicated, he learns, he had fallen from a fire escape and damaged his teeth and face. His family persuades him to enter a Minnesota clinic, described as "the oldest Residential Drug and Alcohol Facility in the World." Frey's enormous alcohol habit, combined with his use of "Cocaine . . . Pills, acid, mushrooms, meth, PCP and glue," make this a very rough ride, with the DTs quickly setting in: "The bugs crawl onto my skin and they start biting me and I try to kill them." Frey captures with often discomforting acuity the daily grind and painful reacquaintance with human sensation that occur in long-term detox; for example, he must undergo reconstructive dental surgery without anesthetic, an ordeal rendered in excruciating detail. Very gradually, he confronts the "demons" that compelled him towards epic chemical abuse, although it takes him longer to recognize his own culpability in self-destructive acts. He effectively portrays the volatile yet loyal relationships of people in recovery as he forms bonds with a damaged young woman, an addicted mobster, and an alcoholic judge. Although he rejects the familiar 12-step program of AA, he finds strength in the principles of Taoism and (somewhat to his surprise) in the unflinching support of family, friends, and therapists, who help him avoid a relapse. Our acerbic narrator conveys urgency and youthfulspirit with an angry, clinical tone and some initially off-putting prose tics--irregular paragraph breaks, unpunctuated dialogue, scattered capitalization, few commas--that ultimately create striking accruals of verisimilitude and plausible human portraits. Startling, at times pretentious in its self-regard, but ultimately breathtaking: 'The Lost Weekend' for the under-25 set.

Miladys Situational Problems for the Cosmetology Student or Energetic Approaches to Emotional Healing

Milady's Situational Problems for the Cosmetology Student

Author: Catherine Frangi

Situational Problems for Cosmetology Students tests students' knowledge of how they should apply the information they have learned to real-life situations. While the Exam Review gauges their recollection of information, this text asks that they apply that knowledge to situations that more closely reflect what they are likely to encounter as a salon employee, demonstrating that they know how to use the information they have learned. The questions are more complex than Exam Review questions, often describing a salon stylist or other professional who has a client with a combination of conditions, problems, or attitudes. The student will have to take many factors into account to achieve the desired results, both from a technical and a communication perspective.

Manic Depression and Creativity or The Fast Food Craze

Manic Depression and Creativity

Author: D Jablow Hershman

In this study, the often turbulent lives and careers of Isaac Newton, Charles Dickens, Ludwig van Beethoven, and Vincent van Gogh are examined in an effort to explain and illustrate the role of manic depression in the creative lives of talented people. Manic Depression and Creativity demonstrates how manic-depressive disorder often becomes the essential difference between talent and genius, and offers valuable insights into the many obstacles and problems this illness poses for highly creative people in all fields, from scientists to film stars to rock musicians. Investigating the inspiration that is sparked and fed by mania, and the overwhelming creative "blocks" brought on by depression, Hershman and Lieb explode the popular myth that suffering is essential to creativity and suggest ways that can alleviate the extreme "highs" and "lows" of this disease. Indeed, with effective treatment, manic depressives can control their lives and increase their productivity.

Virginia Galloway

The profound contribution to civilization by persons with manic depression is illustrated in this book.. Hershman's Brotherhood of Tyrants: Manic Depression and Absolute Power is the companion volume. Although many books about depression do exist, few books speak of manic depression and its multifarious benefits to society. This book provides an insightful, comprehensive. and valuable analysis of manic depression's impact on some of civilization's most influential and creative individuals. This book serves as a valuable tool for mental health professionals and lay public interested in an awareness of manic depression and its effects on some of the most creative individuals ever known. The authors are credible: Hershman is an artist and novelist and Dr. Lieb is a psychiatrist. The companion volume is also co-written by Hershman and Lieb. This text provides a thoughtful analysis of genius followed by a clinically accurate yet understandable description of manic depression. The lives and careers of Newton, Dickens, Beethoven, and van Gogh are examined to explain and illustrate the role of manic depression in creative persons and thus, the contribution of manic depression to society. In a forceful summation, the authors argue for increased education, awareness, and treatment to decrease suffering and possibly increase productivity in people with manic depression. Black and white portraits are provided. A table delineating manic versus depressive symptoms and traits is conscientiously provided for the less psychiatrically astute audience. While the biographies are provided to explain the impact of manic depression, they are somewhat extensive in theirdetails. This book elucidates the positive as well as deleterious effects of manic depression on the lives of some of history's most creative and influential persons. It is an interesting and informative book that is a welcome addition to current literature.

A fascinating look at the personal and creative lives of four major talents tormented by manic-depression (Dickens, Newton, Beethoven, and Van Gogh), probing the stereotype of the mad genius and the role depression has often played in turning talent into genius. Explains how the disorder can be used as a positive factor in the creative artist's life, and suggests ways to alleviate the extreme highs and lows of the disorder. For general readers. No index. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.

Healthline Magazine - Paul Insel, Ph.D.

In this accessible and engaging set of biographies and self-help narrative, Lieb and Hershman expertly discount the myth that suffering is essential to creativity. They discuss combating the dark forces of manic depression and explain how this disorder can be used as a positive force in the creative artist's life, suggesting ways to alleviate the extreme "highs" and "lows" of the disease. With effective treatment, manic-depressives can control their lives and increase their productivity.

Obstetric Myths Versus Research Realities or Layayoga

Obstetric Myths Versus Research Realities: A Guide to the Medical Literature

Author: Henci Goer

Anyone working to improve the childbearing experience and help women avoid unnecessary intervention has encountered numerous "obstetric myths" or "old doctors' tales." And while the evidence in the medical literature may be solidly, often unequivocably, against whatever "the doctor said," without access to that evidence, the pregnant woman is quite reasonably going to follow her doctor. This book is an attempt to make the medical literature on a variety of key obstetric issues accessible to people who lack the time, expertise, access, or proximity to a medical library to research concerns on their own. This compact, accurate, yet understandable reference is designed for people without medical training and organized for easy access.

Layayoga: The Definitive Guide to the Chakras and Kundalini

Author: Shyam Sundar Goswami

The most comprehensive guide to chakra meditation and the ancient spiritual science of layayoga ever created.

• One of the great works on yoga, available for the first time in the United States.

• Full-color plates illustrate each chakra.

With the growing interest in energy medicine in the West, the ancient Hindu tradition of chakra meditation has become increasingly important to both healers and spiritual seekers. While new to us, the chakras have long been studied in the East, with the spiritual science of layayoga having the profoundest knowledge of these energy centers. The fundamental aspect of layayoga is the arousing of dormant energy within the body through concentration and breathing exercises and the movement of this energy through the chakras to achieve supreme consciousness. Unlike kundalini yoga, which starts with the lower chakras and moves energy upward, layayoga meditation starts with the Sahasrara, the spiritual chakra that crowns the aura, and brings energy down to spiritualize each chakra in turn. Layayoga has long been viewed as the most comprehensive and deeply researched examination of the chakras available in the West. Its detailed, illustrated look at each of the chakras and the various meditations and mantras that go with them makes it a must for serious students of yoga.

Maximize Your Vitality and Potency or Dont Worry He Wont Get Far on Foot

Maximize Your Vitality and Potency: For Men over 40

Author: Jonathan V Wright

A book all about natural testosterone.

Library Journal

Wright (Natural Hormone Replacement for Women Over 40, Smart Pub., 1997) proposes that many symptoms of aging can be significantly lessened by appropriate replacement of testosterone. Like other recent writers (Jed Diamond, Male Menopause, LJ 7/98; Charles Inlander, Men's Health and Wellness Encyclopedia, LJ 5/1/98), Wright favors the term "male menopause" for the climacteric. Like Eugene Shippen (The Testosterone Syndrome, LJ 4/1/98), Wright reviews the clinical research of the last 60 years and concludes that critical sex hormone imbalances occur in both sexes in midlife and that natural testosterone therapy is beneficial in treating a number of symptoms and diseases long thought part of the normal aging process: heart disease, prostate disease, muscle and bone weakness, depression, high cholesterol, weight gain, and diminished mental acuity, as well as sexual libido and performance. Wright includes more than most readers may want to know about testosterone; Shippen covers essentially the same ground and is probably the better purchase.--James Swanton, Harlem Hosp. Don't Worry, He Won't Get Far on Foot

Author: John F Callahan

Is it possible to find humor — corrosive, taboo-shattering, laugh-till-you-cry humor — in the story of a 38-year-old- cartoonist who's both a quadriplegic and a recovering alcoholic? The answer is yes, if the cartoonist is John Callahan — whose infamous work has graced the pages of Omni, Penthouse, and The New Yorker — and if he's telling it in his own words and pictures. But Callahan's uncensored account of his troubled — and sometimes impossible — life is also genuinely inspiring. Without self-pity or self-righteousness, this liberating book tells us how a quadriplegic with a healthy libido has sex, what it's like to live in the exitless maze of the welfare system, where a cartoonist finds his comedy, and how a man with no reason to believe in anything discovers his own brand of faith.

S. Gross

John Callahan doesn't need feet to go far. He does it with guts, brains, fingers, and a wonderful sick sense of humor.—National Lampoon

Desperately Seeking Snoozin or Healers Way

Desperately Seeking Snoozin': The Insomnia Cure from Awake to Zzzzz

Author: John Wiedman

John Wiedman is neither a doctor nor a therapist, but the years he has spent in the trenches of insomnia, fighting for an elusive good night's sleep, has made him an expert in the war against sleepless nights. In conversational tones, John talks about how he has overcome a sleeping disorder that affects about one-third of the adult population in America and lays out a blueprint showing how sufferers don't have to spend their nights tossing and turning and their days struggling to stay awake. John uses his "on-the-job" experience to guide readers through a program that will help them develop healthy habits that promote a restful and peaceful night of slumber. Desperately Seeking Snoozing is the one book that can boast that it will put you to sleep. The book is now being recommended by over forty sleep clinics in the United States and Canada for their insomnia patients.

Excerpts of Comments by Insomniacs and Sleep Professionals

"My family and friends can't believe that I can sleep! I almost can't believe it!...I'm alive again!" Holly Boettcher, Insomniac, Appleton, WI

A book that every insomniac should read"- Dr. Peter Hauri, Director of the Insomnia Program, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN-considered by many to be the world's leading authority on insomnia.

"What an educational & entertaining read it was. You're quite the character. Once I started it I couldn't put it down. I loved it!" Lisa Nasu, Insomniac, Tokyo, Japan

"An in-depth journey into the life of the insomnia patient. Truly exceptional and insightful." Dr. Alan Arrington, Director, The Crestwood Center for Sleep Disorders, Huntsville, AL

"I put the principles to work and I now am able to get to sleep without medications or any other 'cures,'" Jodi Judson, Insomniac, Nashville, TN

"I almost didn't want the book to end... The book was well written, comforting, compassionate, clear and funny. When dealing with something as serious as insomnia, a sense of humor is a good coping mechanism. I've never read a book on insomnia that was written that way before. Most were boring and left me feeling hopeless. It was also obvious the books that I had read were not written by anyone that has ever suffered sleep problems before." Meg Kampen, Insomniac, Washington State

"I highly recommend it to anyone struggling with insomnia." Richard G. Copen, Ph.D., Licensed Psychologist Clinical Director, Insomnia Clinic Sparrow Sleep Center, Lansing, MI

"I have started using some of the suggestions in your book and already am seeing an improvement. After all the years of not getting enough sleep I had started thinking that this was as good as it gets. That you were suppose to feel like a zombie all day. I'm sure if I stick with the book it will only get better." Insomniac, Mississippi

"Thank you so much for sharing your experiences. It has been a G-dsend. I plan to tell my friends, there's hope." J. Alexander, Insomniac

"Wonderful book! It corresponds very nicely with the approach that I am following at the Duke Sleep Disorders clinic here in North Carolina. I have had good results with the program, and I am finding your book to be a marvelous support." Eric, Insomniac, North Carolina

"From the first contact I had with your book, I can say I am seduced by its humour, simplicity, modesty and maybe most important its humanity. Your idea of writing about your experience in order to share it with others and bringing this adventure to a happy end is also something I find exciting." Insomniac, Belgium

"An excellent resource that I will recommend to all my patients with insomnia. I think the patient can really relate to this book and say to themselves, 'This is excactly what I am going through.'" Ron Fossececo, RRT, RPSGT, Prog. Coordinator, Sleep Center of Southern Colorado at Parkview

"The title is fabulous and your humor injected into the book was great." Insomniac

"I am still having continuing success. I only had one episode of insomnia through the summer. I was afraid that once I started back to work (teaching school) I may revert to my insomniac behavior. However, School has been going on for a month and I have enjoyed a full six to eight hours of sleep every night." Insomniac, Oklahoma

".... As for your book.... Wonderful! I really enjoyed reading it. You're personal style and insight is very entertaining and informative. You present your ideas in a natural, sincere style that I find refreshing. I can certainly relate to your experiences, and this makes your book especially enjoyable, as opposed to some doctor writing about a topic with no real firsthand knowledge. You've covered just about all the bases in your search for an answer, and I'm sure anyone else with similar problems will appreciate the benefit of your experience. There are so many things that can contribute to sleep problems, and I think your coverage of all the things you looked at can be quite helpful to someone starting to look for his own answers to his individual situation.... Your recommendations for a sleep journal are excellent. This is essential for anyone to get a handle on what's going on. I think in the book you should stress this even more, and present it as REQUIRED. A lot of what we deal with can only be spotted by looking at longer term trends and there is nobody that can remember all the details. A journal chronicling daily events, diet, schedules, etc. is absolutely necessary.... Overall Great Work! I wish you the best of luck in pursuing this project...and I look forward to buying a first edition!...." --Insomniac-Pennsylvania

"...I have read your book several times and want to keep reading it to get it firmly implanted in my 63 year old head. I can tell you the book is GREAT...I have not taken myself off the 50 mgs of Trazadone yet, but hope to get up the nerve to do so soon. You have a great sense of humor and I can relate to much of what you say." --Insomniac-Washington

"I have just finished reading your manuscript, and I must say I am impressed, overwhelmed, inspired, envious, and outright awed by your product. As is inescapable for an author, you have bared your heart and soul to your reader, an incredibly unselfish (and frightening) act... What you have done is offered all of us a blueprint for a plan to overcome any behavioral problem we may have...I know the Lord sent me your manuscript for a reason. Isn't it amazing how He uses each one of us?!" --Anonymous

"I have done extensive work on developing a plan. Out of five nights, I have had two nights where I slept but awoke every hour on the hour, but still felt more rested than I had for a long time. Another night I slept through from 1:30 until 7, which was my wake up time. Last night I abandoned most of my program and as you can imagine, I needed a sleeping pill to get to sleep. So it was a short lesson in discipline, and I am back on track." --Insomniac- British Columbia

"Just finished the book. It was great...This was well written, funny, compassionate, and uncluttered... Your advice, although I've encountered it before, is certainly based on good research. I've tried much of it at one time or another, with varying results, but I lacked the discipline to do it right, as you have done... But you have inspired me to give it another try! And I am very excited. (So excited, I won't fall asleep tonight.)" --Insomniac- California

"This is a prototype for the modern self help book...I can't wait to prescribe it for my patients-young and old." Steven N. Rice, M.D., A.B.P.N. (Board Certified in Psychiatry) Psychiatry Geriatric, Adult & Adolescent (Clinical Assistant Professor, Dept of Psychiatry, UT Memphis)

Library Journal

First-time authors Jacobs and Wiedman bring two complementary and responsible viewpoints to the topic of insomnia. Both have suffered from insomnia, write extensively about the ineffectiveness and sometime harmful consequences of sleeping pills, and suggest starting treatment by keeping a sleep diary. Jacobs, a professor at Harvard Medical School and founder of the Behavioral Medicine Insomnia Program, promotes a drug-free program of healthy sleep patterns based on biofeedback, relaxation, positive thinking, and good sleep habits. Wiedman, a mortgage broker by trade, suggests a very simple three-step plan. While the two books offer similar information, Jacobs's scholarly manner will satisfy those looking for an authoritative answer, while Wiedman's more informal approach will appeal to readers seeking something more personal; Wiedman also includes an excellent annotated list of Internet resources. Both titles are highly recommended for growing consumer health collections, but librarians should be aware that other recent works on this topic by Theresa DiGeronimo, Jodi Mindell, and Gary Zammit (LJ 6/1/97) may already be on the shelves.--Kelly Hensley, East Tennessee State Univ. Lib., Johnson City

Healers Way: Bringing Hands-on Compassion to a Love-Starved World

Author: Earnest Larsen

First new book in 5 years from one of major proponents of the 12-step recovery counseling world. A 7-step process of healing based on the revelation that we are all wounded healers, the process of living is wounding in one way or another, & recognition of such aids us in completing the cycle, healing ourselves & others.

Publishers Weekly

Is there a secret to healing others and ourselves? Larsen, originator of the process known as Stage II recovery from addictive behaviors, replies that although there is no shortcut to recovery, at the root of all human well-being is the question of "love or love denied." Love denied leaves a wound that continues to cause pain in different forms throughout a person's life. Writing with his sister Hegarty, Larsen breaks down the healing process, or "hoop" of recovery, into seven steps. We must make sure our basic physical needs are met; then we get lost, get hurt and get stuck. Only then can we get called, get up and finally get going. By telling the stories of people in different stages of recovery, Larsen seeks to demonstrate that "the hoop" is universal. The book's loose organization, colloquial style, frequent changes of metaphor (on one page we go from bent trees to a bend in the road then the "shark bite... taken out of our soul") and digressions make it hard to follow. Nevertheless, Larsen has a solid understanding of human emotions gained through years of counseling experience, and his conception of recovery is a valuable tool for both healers and those in need of healing. Tourettes Syndrome or Taste of Heritage

Tourette's Syndrome: Finding Answers and Getting Help

Author: Mitzi Waltz

Tourette's syndrome is a neurological disorder usually diagnosed in childhood. It is characterized by tics: physical jerks and involuntary vocalizations. Some people with Tourette's also have other brain-based disorders, particularly attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).

Tourette's syndrome can be a minor challenge or a truly devastating disability. People with Tourette's often experience anxiety, embarrassment, sometimes even harassment. Their symptoms and the misguided reactions of others can prevent them from having a normal childhood, building good relationships, achieving their best in school, or finding meaningful employment. The effects of this disruption can be painful and lifelong.

The good news is that Tourette's is very treatable and sometimes subsides with age. With prompt, consistent intervention, most people with Tourette's can wrest back control of their lives.

Lunch Lessons: Changing the Way We Feed Our Children

Author: Ann Cooper

Remember how simple school lunches used to be? You'd have something from every major food group, run around the playground for a while, and you looked and felt fine. But today it's not so simple. Schools are actually feeding the American crisis of childhood obesity and malnutrition. Most cafeterias serve a veritable buffet of processed, fried, and sugary foods, and although many schools have attempted to improve, they are still not measuring up: 78 percent of the school lunch programs in America do not meet the USDA's nutritional guidelines.

Chef Ann Cooper has emerged as one of the nation's most influential and most respected advocates for changing how our kids eat. In fact, she is something of a renegade lunch lady, minus the hairnet and scooper of mashed potatoes. Ann has worked to transform cafeterias into culinary classrooms. In Lunch Lessons, she and Lisa Holmes spell out how parents and school employees can help instill healthy habits in children.

They explain the basics of good childhood nutrition and suggest dozens of tasty, home-tested recipes for breakfast, lunch, and snacks. The pages are also packed with recommendations on how to eliminate potential hazards from the home, bring gardening and composting into daily life, and how to support businesses that provide local, organic food.

Yet learning about nutrition and changing the way you run your home will not cure the plague of obesity and poor health for this generation of children. Only parental activism can spark widespread change. With inspirational examples and analysis, Lunch Lessons is more than just a recipe book—it gives readers the tools to transform the waychildren everywhere interact with food.

Library Journal

Trained chefs Cooper (Bitter Harvest) and Holmes (In Mother's Kitchen) explain the vital role of good nutrition in children's well-being in this informative and alarming examination of the unhealthy offerings of most school lunch programs. As school cafeterias have increasingly been inundated with corporate-sponsored fast food, childhood obesity rates have soared, and there have been greater behavioral problems in the classroom. Cooper and Holmes provide a clear guide for understanding children's nutritional needs and convincingly argue for the benefits of meals containing locally grown organic whole foods in reasonable, kid-sized portions. They supply numerous encouraging examples of forward-thinking schools that have successfully transformed their lunchroom menus and developed hands-on programs to educate children about balanced nutrition, healthy eating habits, and sustainable farming. Like Eric Schlosser's more broadly focused Fast Food Nation, this book, which includes two chapters of nutritious recipes and a resource guide, delivers a much-needed wake-up call regarding America's poor eating habits. Especially useful for parents, teachers, or school administrators working to improve childhood nutrition; highly recommended for most public libraries.-Ingrid Levin, Florida Atlantic Univ. As the raw food movement enters the culinary mainstream, Chef Alex is right here to help with The Raw Food Primer as a starter kit. Those who try these succulent recipes will enjoy deep comfort, great nutrition, and fresh paths to glowing health.

For many, raw food is already a way of life. But when we try to explain it to friends, family or students who don't yet know the pleasures and the benefits of eating "raw", they may say, "You can't keep up your energy with raw carrots" or "Yuck! That sounds really boring" or "I can't give up my pasta!" To answer such remarks, Chef Alex has written The Raw Food Primer. She gently introduces "first timers" to the concept of raw foods and a vegetarian diet. Encouraging them to add raw food slowly to their diet, she avoids a zealous approach that may frighten off people curious about "uncooking" but not quite ready to give raw cuisine a full embrace. With her charming, low-pressure style, Ferrara eases the reader into true eagerness to try tasty raw dishes and reap the health benefits like more energy. Many people who have gone raw report that they have a leaner structure, clearer skin and eyes, and they no longer experience problems with allergies or fatigue.

The Raw Food Primer is perfect for curious students of this revolutionary food experience or the more experienced raw foodist — or anyone who merely appreciates delicious food. And priced $19.95 (a full $10 off similar-seeming books) they can afford Chef Alex's guidance to begin a raw or modified raw diet.

The Patient's Voice: Experiences of Illness

Author: Jeanine Young Mason

Do you need to add caring to your course? Do your students need to become more aware of the process patients and families go through as they adapt to an illness or death?

Sixteen contemporary autobiographical case studies written by children and adults who have experienced psychiatric and physical illnesses are contained in this extraordinary text. Each case study begins with a brief description of the patient's clinical situation. Chapters are followed by points for discussion and study questions to further direct the exploration of the accounts and enhance students' critical thinking skills.

Cheryl Laskowski

This is a compilation of narratives where the authors write autobiographically about their experiences with physical and mental illness. The purpose is to increase healthcare providers' sensitivity to and compassion for the suffering of others. Further, the text is meant to assist healthcare providers in practically and politically dealing with conditions impacting on vulnerable individuals. The editor describes this text as being geared to ""students in nursing, medicine, and allied health."" This is an appropriate audience for the book. The doctorally prepared editor, who works as an associate professor of nursing at the University of Massachusetts (Amherst) and who is a regular contributor to the journal CNS, is a credible authority on the subject matter. Further, the authors of each chapter are credible, having lived the experience of the illness about which they are writing. The book features a table of contents that includes a title, the chapter author's name, and a quote taken directly from the chapter. A special feature of the text is the critical thinking exercise located at the end of each chapter, designed to assist the reader in critically analyzing the narrative accounts. This is a powerful text that includes 16 autobiographical accounts of illness narratives. Each chapter explores a different dimension of the illness experience. The text would be beneficial for individual purchase. Because the text highlights human responses to illness, it would be especially suitable for purchase by nurses and for use in schools of nursing.

Living with a Black Dog: His Name Is Depression

Author: Matthew Johnston

Living with a Black Dog is perhaps the most useful book ever created about depression. In simple text and strongly supportive illustrations, this slim volume examines, explains, and demystifies one of the most widespread and debilitating problems afflicting modern society.

Whether you've struggled with your own Black Dog for years, wondered why you're feeling sort of "ruff" lately, or known someone shadowed by a dark canine, Living with a Black Dog is for you. Artist and writer Matthew Johnstone, a depression sufferer himself, delivers a moving and uplifting insight into life with this unsavory companion. Even better, the book shows the strength and support to be found within and around us to tame this shaggy beast and ultimately bring it to heel.

Johnstone's book doesn't pretend to have all the answers. It doesn't resort to simple "dog tricks" for dealing with depression. But Living with a Black Dog does deliver understanding, hope, and the assurance that Black Dog days are not forever.

Author: Alain Herriott

Quantum-Touch teaches ways to focus and amplify life-force energy (chi) through simple breathing and body awareness exercises. If I Live to Be 100 or Coping with Chronic Illness

If I Live to Be 100: Lessons from the Centenarians

Author: Neenah Ellis

If I Live to Be 100 is based on One Hundred Years of Stories, a series of profiles of American centenarians, which Ellis produced and which aired in 2000 on NPR's Morning Edition. There are now more 100-year-olds alive than at any other time in history, and longevity studies are finding many of them are active, healthy and engaged with the world around them. Neenah Ellis set out to meet these people and to hear what insights, memories, wisdom and just plain common sense tips they have to offer. What she's found will surprise you. The original radio profiles will be intercut with Ellis's reading of her book. If I Live to be 100 is not simply a transcript of the radio series, but about how the experience of meeting and talking with these amazing centenarians affected the author.

Publishers Weekly

For the National Public Radio series One Hundred Years of Stories, broadcast two years ago, Ellis interviewed Americans at least 100 years old some of them ailing or confused in their thinking, others completely coherent, lively and full of fascinating tales from the past and insightful wisdom gleaned from a century of living. The poignancy of a prolific writer and Hollywood veteran who can't remember enough to participate in the interview is offset by a woman who lives alone, still rows her own boat and occasionally skinny-dips, and by a man who marries for the third time at 103. Ellis reveals little of her own life here, and withholds any intimate introspection when, for example, a 101-year-old law professor describes his regret at spending so much time on his work rather than having a family and points out that Ellis's childless lifestyle is similar. On the other hand, she abandons straight journalism by indulging in a long tangent about "limbic resonance," or getting absorbed in someone's telling of a story. She concludes that "emotional connection with another person is all that will make you happy," but she tells readers this rather than letting her interviewees speak for themselves. If Ellis had stuck with the subjects' own voices and fleshed out their stories in more detail, this might have been a powerful oral history of America in the 20th century. Instead, it reads like a radio show brief quotes with a few sound bites of editorialization. Agent, Jonathon Lazear. (Sept.) Forecast: National publicity, a radio campaign and NPR sponsorship and author interviews will put this book on older readers' radar. It should sell well as a gift book come the holidays. Therapeutic Touch

Author: Janet Macra

A comprehensive instruction guide to the gentle, powerful, non-invasive healing technique being used increasingly both inside and outside the medical profession. Available to anyone searching to help others in pain.

Publishers Weekly

This is a clear and concise introduction to therapeutic touch, a healing art based on the ancient practice of lying on hands. Although still considered experimental, therapeutic touch is used in many hospitals alongside more conventional medicine to alleviate a variety of injuries and illnesses. Macrae, who taught nursing at New York University, gives a balanced presentation of theory and practice. The theory is based on the concept of an energy field surrounding the bodymuch as a gravitational field surrounds objects. When a person is ill, the flow of energy around his body is congested or obstructed. A trained practitioner can feel these blockages and use his hands to help clear them and to redirect the patient's energy flow to a more healthy pattern. Readers are encourage to try to cure their friends' headaches; helpful illustrations are included. (February)

Library Journal

Healing by physical contact has been part of medical practice throughout history. Macrae, a registered nurse who has instructed health professionals and laypersons in the art of therapeutic touch, describes methods for assessing the client and using the universal life force in everyone to initiate healing. The concept of wholeness is important in this therapy, and these noninvasive treatments make them a reassuring adjunct to traditional medicine for disorders, chronic diseases, and wounds and injuries. Low-key in approach, this book is recommended for libraries with collections in holistic medicine. Karen McNally Bensing, Metropolitan General Hospital Lib., Cleveland

Permanence or The Yoga Minibook for Weight Loss

Permanence: Tattoo Portraits by Kip Fulbeck

    Author: Kip Fulbeck

Once a fringe phenomenon, tattooing is now a full-blown cultural fact. More than 40 million people in the U.S. alone have tattoos, all with unique stories about why they chose to indelibly mark their bodies. Permanence combines photographic tattoo portraits with these stories, told in the subjects' own words and handwriting. Kip Fulbeck brings together young and old of all races, religions, and political persuasions—from celebrities to suburban moms to Hells Angels. Including interviews with celebrity tattooers Kat Von D and Oliver Peck (Miami Ink), hardcore legend Evan Seinfeld, and some regular folks, Permanence is an entertaining and enlightening portrait of the tattooed population today.

Part of a series launched in 2003 (for a list of available and forthcoming titles, see www.vegoutguide.com), these vegetarian guides to Chicago and Denver/Salt Lake City include restaurants, fast-food joints, cafes, and salad bars along with appendixes that list juice bars and farmers' and natural markets. In addition to basic information such as address, web site, price, hours, and parking, the entries provided for each of the more than 140 restaurants listed in these 8 1/2" by 3 1/2" guidebooks also include a narrative describing the restaurant's ambience and its featured dishes, an overall rating from one to four stars, and the type of menu, from full-with vegetarian/vegan choices-to vegetarian or vegan only (fewer than 20 percent of the entries). The excellent narrative in particular will be useful in helping readers decide where to eat. A foldout map indicates the location of each establishment, but those unfamiliar with the city may have to consult a detailed street map. Seven Masters One Path or Yoga for Chickens

Seven Masters, One Path: Meditation Secrets from the World's Greatest Teachers

    Author: John Selby

Seven Masters, One Path brings together the seven primary practices of the world's most revered spiritual masters -- Krishnamurti, Lao-tzu, Buddha, Jesus, Mohammed, Gurdjieff, and Patanjali -- in one simple yet complete program. Finally everyone who wants to learn how to meditate, or to deepen their meditation practice, can turn to one comprehensive guidebook that leads readers gently yet surely into experiencing the seven universal dimensions of daily meditation practice.

Seven Masters, One Path guarantees access to deep meditative experience for people seeking relief from emotional and mental stress, and especially for anyone who longs to experience a deeper sense of connection with our spiritual core. No matter how divergent all the theologies, philosophies, rituals, and dogmas of the world's great meditative traditions might appear, John Selby reveals that the underlying intent of the original masters was remarkably similar -- to help people to point their attention toward regular contact with the divine, through opening hearts and souls to direct communion with God by whatever name.

Offering one meditation each from the seven teachers, Seven Masters, One Path emphasizes the commonalities in the diverse traditions, ultimately providing a unique and accessible meditation program that anyone can master.

    Library Journal

Psychologist Selby, who has written seven previous meditation and self-help books, here offers a guide to meditative practice as taught by the traditions of Patanjali, Lao-Tzu and the Taoists, Buddhism, Christianity, Islam, Gurdjieff, and Krishnamurti. While some adherents may not be comfortable with the yoking together of these often disparate traditions, Selby knows his audience, and his work will find a receptive readership among those interested in New Age spirituality. New interesting book: Finding Betty Crocker or Busy Peoples Down Home Cooking Without The Down Home Fat

    Yoga for Chickens

    Author: Lynn Brunell

Chickens know a few things about feeling fried. That's why they've been practicing yoga for centuries. As this hilariously illustrated guide to simple yoga poses reveals, we have much to learn from their bird-brained wisdom. Anyone who's all cooped up or stressed out by the pecking order will feel like a spring chicken in no time thanks to such postures as Chick's Pose, Snake in the Grass, and Chicken of the Sea. Sections on breathing and stretching enlighten any load, and a series of fix-it routines unscramble such problem areas as neck, thighs, and aching feet. Thoughtful hen koans (why did the chicken cross the road?) and plucky affirmations invite contemplation and are sure to inspire budding yoginis to spread their wings. Googly eyed, combs akimbo, these very funky chickens will illuminate both beginners and the adept, and are sure to make anyone's day more chirpy — all for a nice cheep price. Even the toughest old bird will crack a smile with Yoga for Chickens.

Listen with the Heart or Understanding Healthcare

Listen with the Heart: Relationships and Hearing Loss

    Author: Michael A Harvey

While distressing for an individual, hearing loss also takes a heavy toll on family and friends. These stories chronicle the unique challenges of hearing loss in interpersonal relationships, including communication, self-identity, and how to continue sharing and growing in these relationships. Many shared activities, such as enjoying music, whispering sweet nothings to a lover, and hearing children's voices are deeply missed by both the hearing and hearing-impaired relationship partners. This book illustrates the power of relationships to transform people and how each party has unparalleled opportunities to grow in profound and unpredictable ways.

Author Biography: Michael Harvey is the author of Odyssey of Hearing Loss and Family Narratives of Hearing Loss. He lives in Boston, Massachusetts.

Reviewer: Linda Jacobs-Condit, AuD, CCC-A (George Washington University)
Description: This book depicts vignettes that describe how individuals with hearing loss as well as those in their lives are affected by that loss.
Purpose: The purpose is to use tales to portray how psychological, social, and spiritual influences shape one's experience of hearing loss and that of significant others. For me, as an audiologist interested in bettering my counseling abilities, fulfilling these objectives can give better insight into the needs of others. The author meets his objectives using stories.
Audience: According to the author, this book is intended for use by a wide audience:spouses, children, parents, friends, extended family members, interested laypersons, and professionals. I believe this would make interesting reading for all of these groups, yet professionals may find it to be "light reading" because it is not technical in nature. The author is a clinical psychologist whose practice includes many persons with hearing loss. This is one of several books he has written about psychotherapy with the deaf and hard-of-hearing.
Features: This author uses stories to describe crises of hearing loss, as well as other crises that can occur in life:loss of loved ones through divorce or death, changes in health, for example. He includes scenarios to portray individuals' coping strategies, ability to empathize, to more fully develop relationships, and to "listen with the heart." The stories are compelling and draw one into the book. As a professional, I wanted more.
Assessment: This would be a good book for families to read, as well as students entering the field of audiology or psychology. The use of stories can often be more instructive and make for more "fun" reading than technical texts.

Healing States or Bodies In Treatment

Healing States: A Journey into the World of Spiritual Healing and Shamanism

    Author: Alberto Villoldo

A colorful and compelling examination of evidence for the mind's ability to heal, taking a step into the fascinating world of psychic healing and shamanism. 80 black-and-white photographs.

    Publishers Weekly

Although the authors of this provocative exploration into the spiritual realms of healing are trained in the orthodoxies of Western medicine and psychology (both have doctorates and are researchers and scientists in San Francisco), their inquiries into ``mind over matter'' phenomena have led them to conclude that science alone is inadequate in treating human illness. (On this subject, they note the question put to them by a Peruvian shaman: ``In the training of your healers, what steps do they take to attune Mother Earth and the Great Spirit?'') By observing diverse parapsychological and metaphysical methods of mediums, spiritists and others following ``indigenous'' healing from ancient to contemporary societies, Villoldo and Krippner enhance our concept of health by incorporating ideas that are ignored by allopathic medicine, a process advocated by the World Health Organization. The freshness of their approach results in a steady level of stimulation. (April)

Bodies In Treatment: The Unspoken Dimension

    Author: Frances Sommer Anderson

Bodies in Treatment is a challenging volume that brings into conceptual focus an unspoken dimension of clinical work'the body and nonverbal communication'that has long occupied the shadowy realm of tacit knowledge. By bringing visceral, sensory, and imagistic modes of emotional processing to the forefront, editor Frances Sommer Anderson and the contributors to this original collection expand the domain of psychodynamic engagement. Working at the leading edge of psychoanalytic theory and practice, and in the forefront of the integrative psychotherapy movement, Anderson has created a collaborative project that stimulates interdisciplinary dialogue on the developmental neurobiology of attachment, the micro-processing of interchanges between the infant and caregiver, the neuroscience of emotional processing and trauma, body-focused talking treatments for trauma, and research in cognitive science.

Enlightened by experiencing body-based treatments for thirty years, Anderson reflects onthe powerful impact of these interventions, recounting attempts to integrate her somatically-informed discoveries into the talking frame. Reaching further, her contributors present richly informative accounts of how experiences in body-based modalities can be creatively integrated into a psychoanalytic framework of treatment. Readers are introduced to specialized modalities, such as craniosacral therapy and polarity therapy, as well as to the adjunctive use of yoga, the effectiveness of which can be grounded neurophysiologically. Somatic interventions are discussed in terms of the extent to which they can promote depth-psychological change outside the psychoanalytic consultingroom as well as how they can enrich the relational process in psychodynamic treatment. The final sections of Bodies in Treatment explore the range of ways in which patients? and therapists? bodies engage, sustain, and contain the dynamics of treatment.
